Is High-Speed Wi-Fi the New Private Jet Essential?

Introduction

There was a time when Wi-Fi aboard a private jet was considered an impressive extra. Today, expectations are changing.

Private travelers increasingly expect to remain just as connected at 40,000 feet as they are in their office, home, or hotel. Emails, video calls, streaming, messaging and cloud-based work no longer necessarily stop when the cabin door closes.

As new satellite technology reaches more business aircraft, reliable high-speed Wi-Fi is quickly moving from a luxury amenity to something many travelers consider essential.

The Private Jet Cabin Is Becoming a Connected Space

One of the greatest advantages of flying privately is time.

A flight that might otherwise become several hours of downtime can instead become productive time for an executive preparing for a meeting, a family streaming entertainment on several devices, or travelers simply remaining connected throughout the journey.

The technology supporting that experience has also changed dramatically.

Starlink’s arrival in business aviation has helped introduce significantly faster satellite connectivity to aircraft categories that historically may not have had access to the same level of service found aboard larger, newer jets.

Virtual Hangar® recently explored this shift in Starlink Installations by SatCon, looking at how new connectivity technology is becoming available across more of the private aviation fleet.

High-Speed Connectivity Is Reaching More Aircraft

One of the more interesting developments is not simply that faster Wi-Fi exists—it is that it is becoming available on aircraft at very different price points.

As covered by Virtual Hangar Media, SatCon’s Starlink installation program was introduced with an advertised entry installation cost of approximately $75,000, targeting aircraft such as the Hawker 800XP and other aircraft within the midsize segment.

Some installations can also be completed in approximately 24 hours, significantly reducing one of the traditional concerns associated with major aircraft upgrades: downtime.

That combination of installation cost and reduced downtime could make high-speed connectivity increasingly common throughout the private aviation fleet—not simply aboard ultra-long-range aircraft.

Travelers Are Beginning to Notice

Connectivity is also beginning to influence which aircraft travelers prefer.

Virtual Hangar® network data highlighted in its SatCon and Starlink analysis showed that aircraft equipped with Starlink-powered connectivity were being booked 33% more frequently than comparable aircraft using alternative systems.

That suggests passengers may no longer be treating connectivity as an afterthought.

Two aircraft may have similar seating, range and cabin dimensions, but if one offers a noticeably better connectivity experience, that difference can become part of the decision.

For an executive who needs to join a video conference, a family traveling with multiple connected devices, or someone who simply expects uninterrupted internet access, the Wi-Fi system may matter almost as much as the cabin itself.

“Wi-Fi Equipped” Doesn't Always Mean the Same Thing

This is where travelers need to look a little deeper.

An aircraft being listed as Wi-Fi equipped does not necessarily mean it offers high-speed connectivity.

Different systems can vary significantly in speed, geographic coverage and their ability to support demanding applications. One system may work well for email and messaging, while another can support streaming, cloud-based work and video conferencing across several devices.

Before choosing an aircraft, travelers may want to ask:

What connectivity system is installed?

Can it support streaming and video calls?

Will it provide coverage throughout the planned route?

Those questions are becoming increasingly relevant when comparing aircraft.

Connectivity Can Affect the Aircraft's Value, Too

The benefits are not limited to passengers.

Virtual Hangar®’s aircraft data has also begun demonstrating how connectivity upgrades may influence aircraft market value.

In one example featured in Virtual Hangar Media’s Starlink analysis, comparative Jetstimate™ analytics estimated that a Starlink-equipped Hawker 800XP could see approximately $220,000 in additional aircraft value compared with an aircraft without the upgrade.

For aircraft owners, that makes the connectivity conversation increasingly interesting. High-speed Wi-Fi may improve the passenger experience while potentially making the aircraft more desirable for charter and resale.

Should Wi-Fi Influence Your Next Aircraft Choice?

For many travelers, yes.

Aircraft selection has traditionally centered around range, cabin size, baggage capacity, passenger count and price. Connectivity should increasingly be considered alongside those factors.

Through Virtual Hangar®, travelers can explore aircraft options while considering the complete mission—not simply the aircraft category or hourly price.

For members, that ability to evaluate the details of an aircraft becomes increasingly valuable as amenities such as connectivity begin to have a greater impact on the onboard experience. Explore Virtual Hangar® Membership to learn more about accessing the platform and available aircraft.

A flight may only last a few hours, but if those hours can remain productive, connected and uninterrupted, the right connectivity system can make a noticeable difference.

High-speed Wi-Fi was once something passengers were pleasantly surprised to find aboard a private jet.

Increasingly, they may be surprised when it isn’t there.
